Garlington family papers, 1829-1882.

Papers include instructions (1829) from Arnold Milner, commissioner of locations for Laurens District (S.C.), to "any deputy surveyor" to lay out a tract of land for John Garlington; a receipt (1862) to the estate of J.D. Garlington for one year's subscription to the Charleston Mercury; a notice of non-payment (1863) of a debt owed to John D. Williams by H.W. Garlington, notarized by Alexander Laughlin of Richland District (S.C.), with an attached promissory note. Also included is a scrapbook fragment (1836-1865?) containing newspaper clippings concerning the Confederate States of America and other topics; a presidential pardon (1865) for H.W. Garlington issued by Andrew Johnson; Confederate military records, including orders, discharge and parole papers, quartermaster's records including orders to pay, and receipts; letters; a petition (1867) from the town council of Aiken (S.C.) to General D.E. Sickles (Union commander of the 2nd military district of the Department of the South) regarding the use of money from inn licenses for the improvement of town sanitation; accounts for expenses for the transport and burial of the body of H.L. Garlington; an invoice (1861) for cloth, a sword, buttons, and other items bought of Spencer & Teague (Charleston, S.C.); photographs (1882) of a German observatory at Aiken (S.C.) set up to study the transit of Venus; and other items.

Confederate Army officer. The son of Henry W. Garlington of South Carolina, he entered Confederate service in the 3rd South Carolina Regiment. South Carolina family. Henry W. Garlington, the son of John Garlington (b. 1784), was a Confederate Army officer. Henry W. Garlington was the father of William Hunter Garlington (1834-1889) and Henry Laurens Garlington (1839-1864), both of whom were born in Laurens County. William Hunter Garlington was a physician who served as a surgeon in a Georgia regiment of the Confederate Army. He died in Walnut Grove, Alabama.
